As we move into the last few months of 2024, the High Country has no shortage of important conversations that are driving our economic development landscape. We invite you to join us to hear directly from those involved in key projects and get a sense of what's to come for our area in 2025 during the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce State of the Community luncheon.

Welcome & Opening Remarks


State of Campus

A snapshot of where Appalachian State University stands today and goals for the future.


Since  its return to regular operations, Interim Chancellor Dr. Heather Norris of Appalachian State University shares details on the current State of Campus. We'll hear updates surrounding, storm recovery and impacts on spring semester, along with information on key programs and facility development. As the University continues to demonstrate its commitment to community-focused leadership, learn more about the vision for the role App State can play in our continued recovery and return to economic prosperity.


Update from NC DOT 

The North Carolina Department of Transportation continues to make critical repairs to hundreds of roads throughout the High Country region. What are the current focus areas? How is NCDOT preparing for our upcoming turn to colder weather? How does Helene's impact alter timelines and budgets for future projects?  

Michael Poe, Division 11 Engineer for NC DOT will provide updates on current operations and provide insight into how NC DOT will balance its role in Helene recovery with its current scope of work in the area.


State of the Chamber


David Jackson and Joe Furman will provide an in-depth discussion on Helene related recovery efforts, key projects, and future plans for 2025 from the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and the Watauga Economic Development Commission. David will provide valuable insights into the ongoing initiatives of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, highlighting its role in supporting local economic recovery.

Joe will provide updates on key economic development topics such as housing, childcare, and workforce development, along with an overview of progress in these areas. 

Additional updates will cover a range of important community and economic initiatives, offering a comprehensive look at what lies ahead for the region.
