The availability and specialization of health care continues to serve as a main ingredient of the quality of life High Country residents enjoy. Newly appointed President/CEO of the Appalachian Regional Health Care System, Chuck Mantooth, discussed system growth and local health care industry trends on this week’s Mind Your Business, a weekly radio program produced in partnership between the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and High Country Radio.

Mantooth outlined the expansion of services he has witnessed since beginning work with Watauga Medical Center in the early 1990s. He also discussed how partnerships with Appalachian State University will further enhance the variety of offerings to a growing service area.

“One of the figures that I think goes unnoticed is the population of the three counties that we mainly serve – Avery, Watauga, and even up into Ashe County – the population of those three counties total 100,000 people, Mantooth said. “Then you throw in the summer residents and (college) students and you’re talking about a pretty good sized population that can support the specialists we now have. We employ over 20 specialists on staff throughout the system. We’ve really grown from just a Boone and Watauga County system to more of a regional hospital system.”

Mind Your Business is a weekly production of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. The program highlights chamber members and allows for a deeper conversation about their history, impact on the community, and upcoming events.
