Dr. Torrey Gorla discusses the value of wellness in today’s health care world on Mind Your Business

Health care is a hot topic on the minds of Americans, with pending legislation driving conversation about costs moving forward.

Dr. Torrey Gorla of Blue Ridge Acupuncture and Integrative Health discusses the benefits of a wellness model of health care versus disease management on this week’s Mind Your Business, a weekly radio program produced in partnership between the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and High Country Radio.

Dr. Gorla explains treating root causes of disease can often times be a more effective and less costly method of care than offering medications that can sometimes simply mask symptoms.

“What is really bankrupting America is chronic reoccurring problems – the obesity, diabetes, autoimmune, and depression,” said Dr. Gorla. “These types of diseases, when you look at the pharmaceutical based model, are usually treating symptoms of the problem and not the cause of the problem. If we liken the patient having a health problem to a leaky roof, a lot of times (treatment) is like putting out a bucket. If we want to save money in this country as a family and as individuals, the way to do it is to have a wellness model of health care.”

Mind Your Business is a weekly production of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. The program highlights chamber members and allows for a deeper conversation about their history, impact on the community, and upcoming events.
